While insulating the attic I came across the item pictured above.  It’s about 1.5 inches in diameter, and must at some point have been attached to the mirror that it mentions in the directions.  I did a search for “Gilmore & McCandless” online and came across the image below in an archive of the Victoria Daily Colonist, dated April 16, 1895:

And another from June 9, 1896:

Interestingly, 35/37 Johnson Street doesn’t exist these days; the street numbers start at 500.   An online search for Gilmore & McCandless Merchant Tailors and Clothiers indicates that the building it occupied is now 557-559 Johnson Street.  Here it is today:
